Why home birth?

If you have had a home birth - or you are planning on one - that is a question you are bound to hear. Why in this day and age of modern medicine would any woman - who does not have to - choose a home birth? It makes to sense no the common mind.

"Aren't you scared?"

"What if something happens?"

"If I had not been in a hospital my baby would have died!"

"Are you crazy?"

"You'll have a mess to clean."

"Some women obviously care about the birth experience rather than the safety of their baby."

The list goes on and on. In the United States, in 1938 50% of births occurred at home, in 1950 it was less than 1%! To date this statistic is still valid as in the United States about 1% of births take place out of hospitals with about 2/3 of those at home and the other 1/3 in free standing birth centers.

Some recent statistics - 2010 - say that the home birth rate is increasing in the United States and this again brings the question...why would anyone choose a home birth?

What would compel a mom to give birth at home - sometimes even unattended - what are their reasons for home birth?

Natural Pregnancy Mentor gives you many reasons of why we feel homebirth is a valid - and safe - choice...but what about the women out there who have made that choice? What were there reasons? Is it the uneducated who makes that choice? The uninsured?
