Note: Vitamin C aids in the assimilation of iron.

    Foods to Avoid

    These foods inhibit iron absorption:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Excess bran

  • A Note to Vegetarians

If you are a vegetarian, your red cell count may normally be lower than the RBC of meat eaters because of a lack of vitamin B-12. Therefore, you may need to supplement with B-12 tablets.

    Natural Treatments for Anemia: Herbs

Herbs are a wonderful anemia therapy. Herbs for anemia help you to get rid of anemia without the nasty side-effects of iron pills mainly... constipation.

    Yellow Dock

    Rumex Crispus

Instead of iron pills, you may want to try yellow dock root, a more easily assimilated source of iron. This plant contains only a small amount of this important mineral, yet herbalists consider it one of the most effective herbs for raising your iron level.

Although the way that this herb increases iron remains a mystery, the proof is in the results.

    It can be prepared as:

  • A decoction or tea: use 1/4 to 1/2 tsp three times per day
  • A syrup
  • A tincture: use 25 to 40 drops per day

  • Liquid Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is the natural plant pigment that colors grass, vegetables, leaves and any plant matter that is green. Some refer to the Chlorophyll as the lifeblood of plants.

    Indeed it is!

Although the full benefits of chlorophyll to the human body have yet to be uncovered, nutritionists believe the benefits are far reaching. The chemical makeup of chlorophyll is the same as human hemoglobin at the exception of one molecule.

    That's right, one molecule!

Many midwives give liquid chlorophyll to pregnant moms who are anemic or have lost too much blood during the birth.

A Mom Tip For A Natural Pregnancy From Florence

On a side note, you may enjoy reading this story. It's all true.

After one of my births, I had a very full bladder which I could not empty. I tried...

    ...Hard!

It was affecting my uterus being able to clamp down as it should. Basically my bladder and my uterus were competing for the space and my bladder was winning! It got to the point that my midwife had to catheterize me. Yeah, fun.

Evidently, I had more than normal blood loss. My vitals remained strong however - I'll credit my supplements for that but that is another story.

My hematocrit however was low 10.3 - an even 10 means you are anemic. Not good!

I drank 2 bottles of liquid chlorophyll in a couple of weeks. Can't say it's all that tasty.

    My next check...12.4!

    Yippy!

    So yes it does work.

No adverse side effects, drug interactions, or overdosing appears in the literature at the time of this writing.

Caution: Minor inconvenience, liquid chlorophyll will turn everything...and I mean everything a nice green hue...including your teeth!

My kids thought it was great fun!

The trick is to drink then brush your teeth right away.

As we mentioned before, it does not taste that great but you can mix it in smoothies with some success.

    Alfalfa Also Known As Lucerne

    Medicago sativa

This herb cleanses toxins from tissues, is diuretic - increases urine output, controls bleeding, and lowers cholesterol levels. It influences hormones and the circulatory and urinary systems.

Alfalfa is rich in minerals and vitamins and contains organic acids, free amino acids, non-protein amino acids, strachydrine, coumarins, isoflavonoids, saponins and steroids. It contains vitamins A, D, E and K as well as chlorophyll and carotene and minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium.

Herbalists use alfalfa as one of the treatments for anemia.

Alfalfa has however many other uses. Some say that because of its estrogenic activity, Alfalfa should not to be taken during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. Some midwives however recommend it in the last few weeks of pregnancy to boost the vitamin K in the blood.

Usually, Alfalfa is the major ingredient in liquid chlorophyll.
