Silas' Natural Birth
I was scheduled for an induction on the 16th but I was fighting it! Luckily my baby arrived on his own on the 10th. I wouldn't have allowed the induction anyway. I am so glad i didn't get my membranes swept or any of the other things they offered. My labor started at 4 am and he was born at 3:05 pm.
I labored at home until noon when our doula told us it was time to go. I didn't believe her and thought I'd be in labor for at least 12 more hours. I got to the hospital at 1 pm, jumped in the labor pool and almost got to have a water birth. The hospital doesn't allow water birth but my midwife is wonderful and wanted to let it happen. I was so incredibly loud that the rest of the hospital staff heard me and kept coming to tell the midwife to get me out of the water. That was not fun but I had him 10 minutes after I got out. Our doula was really really amazing. She kept me safe and the hospital staff at a distance. One nurse was really making me mad telling me to be quiet and "blow like you're blowing out a candle." My doula kept telling me to make any noise that felt right and to be as loud as I wanted, that really helped me.
She got them to back off about the IV I refused and they gave me hell about but I didn't have to have it. They settled "against medical advice" for a hep lock and I could go on and on... Silas was 6lbs 7oz and 19.5 inches tall. It was an amazing experience. For our next child, I would like to try a home water birth. There were no complications with my pregnancy or birth of Silas so I feel very confident that we will have a successful home birth! My husband is very supportive of the idea. I cannot wait for our next baby. My husband is in the army and we are moving to Texas soon so I will not have the same doula next time but I will find another fabulous woman to help me through the pain. I cannot express my adoration for my doula. I don't know how I could have gotten through it without her. My experience with her as inspired me to work towards becoming a doula myself. My doula is also a lactation consultant and without her I probably wouldn't have breastfed my son. She gave me all the information and support I needed and I am so thankful for that. Breastfeeding has been a wonderful experience and we'll keep going until he is at least a year old. Silas is 3 months old now and he is fantastic. I had no idea what LOVE was until the day I met my son. He has brought an infinite amount of happiness to our lives. From the moment he was born, his eyes were open and everyone comments on how alert he is. I believe that is because we chose not use any drugs during labor. |
