Cardiac Arrest is One of the Side Effects of Epidural

pregnancy, breastfeeding, childbirth, homebirth

It is an undisputed fact that one of the side effects of epidural is cardiac arrest. Yes, it is rare. Before you look at this true story let's look at some facts.

The epidural procedure - even though popular - is not risk free. A recent study conducted in England from 2000 to 2005 concluded that "there are serious complications with epidural anesthesia which although rare must be taken into consideration."

The experts conducting the study called for the creation of a national database to record all complications arising from epidural anesthesia. So what did the scientist discover about the side effects of epidural?

After the epidural procedure is administered, 12 out of 18,100 patients developed major complications after receiving epidural pain relief. These major complications were:

  • Epidural abscesses
  • Meningitis
  • Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus infections also known as MRSA
  • Blood clots

  • According to a 2002 study by Dr. Mayberry:

"Potential epidural side effects during labor include . . . life-threatening complications: severe low blood pressure, respiratory or cardiac arrest, convulsions, severe allergic reaction."

Side Effects of Epidurals: A True Story

Since most of us will never meet someone who has suffered from a major epidural side effect, we get the false sense that epidurals are just a great and safe way to go through labor with "no pain."

This false sense of security is to the detriment of women and their babies.

On Christmas Eve 2009, shortly after the administration of an epidural anesthesia, Tracy Hermanstorfer went into cardiac arrest...and she and her unborn baby died. Both mom and baby were revived and all ends well. But please, know the facts before you submit yourself to procedures that could jeopardize your well being and the well being of your family. There is only one you and you are way too precious to die from what is falsely called "an easy and safe procedure!"

A Medical Mystery That Left Doctors Stunned?
Did the anchor really say this?

Did you notice? Epidural anesthesia is NOT mentioned in this clip? And most of the newspaper articles you will find on this story says she was "getting prepped." Yet, she did receive an epidural anesthesia.

Here is one station which was willing to tell the truth:

Tracy Hermanstorfer went into labor nearly two weeks earlier than her due date. She was discussing baby names with her husband, Mike, while she was getting an epidural.

"I was feeling weird, but nothing out of the ordinary," says Tracy.

Note: Another thing...two weeks before your due date is term NOT premature!

Here is what one registered nurse says:

"This woman was the victim of the epidural she received. As a registered nurse, Childbirth educator and legal nurse consultant/risk manager, I can promise you that she "died" as a result of too much medication or improper handling of her anesthesia, which they do acknowledge she received right before arresting. There is a huge medical cover-up here, with the doctors acting as though they don't know why she arrested! Their recovery was absolutely a miracle, because it sounds like their medical care in response to the arrests was lacking. If they didn't have a clue as to the cause, they certainly didn't act appropriately to address it!"

In conclusion, side effects of epidural are real and can be life threatening...before making any decision, we just ask that you have all the facts. Epidurals can be wonderful and safer than general anesthesia for the women who must have one BUT epidurals are not risk free. So let's make sure that the benefits outweigh the risks.
