Postpartum and Homeopathy

After you give birth, postpartum and homeopathy are not necessarily something you may think about. Yet as you can benefit from homeopathic remedies during your pregnancy and labor, the postpartum period is no different.

If you are unsure about what homeopathy is Click Here

In this section, you will find remedies for:

  • Healing after the birth
  • Retained placenta
  • Postpartum hemorrhage
  • Asphyxia of the newborn
  • Perineal tears and episiotomies
  • Post-natal depression

  • Postpartum and homeopathy

Keep in mind that you may not have all the symptoms that go with a particular remedy - just take the one that matches the best or comes the closest. Use a 30C potency, take one dose - 1 to 5 pellets, but usually 3 - under the tongue and wait. The right remedy should have some effect within half an hour. Another method: put the remedy in water and stir vigorously before each additional sip, which you should take only if there is a relapse or a failure to make progress on the single dose.

NOTE on pregnancy and homeopathy: In homeopathy, one dose is whatever remedies you take at ONE TIME. And 2 pellets of one remedy - for example a 30c, DO NOT add up to a 60c. A potency remains the same!

Postpartum and Homeopathy: Healing After the Birth

In the weeks - and even months - after the birth of your baby, your body initiates its own healing. Symptoms like after birth-pains during breast-feeding are all part of your body's way of returning to its natural state.

Many women feel a little down after birth due to the re-balancing of their hormones, blood sugar levels and the general tiredness of caring for a newborn.

After the birth of your baby, you can use these homeopathic remedies to speed up your healing process:

  • Aconite: For shock following the fear of the intensity of birth, in yourself, your partner or your baby.
  • Arnica: To relieve soreness, bruising and after pains. Also helpful for babies who are bruised from a long labor or a forceps delivery.
  • Bellis perennis: Take to help with bruising to deep muscle tissues if you are still sore three days after labor.
  • Kali phos: For mental exhaustion after delivery, with headache, tiredness but too excited to sleep, especially in the first day or two after the birth.
  • Pulsatilla: Post-natal "blues," especially when your milk comes in. You feel absolutely miserable and burst into tears at the slightest thing - but you feel much better after being comforted.

    Postpartum and Homeopathy: Retained Placenta

Nursing your baby immediately after birth helps to detach your placenta naturally. However, there are times when your placenta wants to be a little stubborn.

Usually in the hospital, an allopathic drug Syntometrine - which is derived from the homeopathic remedy Secale - is given. But the use of the natural remedies to aid contraction of your womb and expulsion of your placenta might prevent the need of Syntometrine.

Note: As long as there is not excessive bleeding, you can wait on your placenta for a little while.

To assist your body in expelling the placenta these remedies should be considered:

  • Pulsatilla: You crave fresh air and want windows opened. Dry mouth but without thirst. Gentle and yielding and better with sympathy.
  • Cantharis: You have painful, burning urination. Constant desire to urinate but will only pass tiny amounts. Anxious, restless and angry.
  • Sepia: You will have the sensation that your uterus is falling out - a bearing-down sensation. You want to be covered and will want to be alone but afraid to be alone.

    Postpartum and Homeopathy: Postpartum Hemorrhage

Massaging or pulling on the umbilical cord after the birth of a baby can cause stress on the detachment process and can result in partial separation of the placenta which can result in postpartum hemorrhage. Something that is very uncommon at home as midwives are usually very gentle and in no hurry during the third stage.

Many women choose not to use pitocin. So without the drug, what can be done to help? There are many methods that are used - including the controversial eating of the placenta! And yes, it does work!

In case you are not that brave, here are some remedies to consider:

  • Aconite: You will be restless and have bright red blood that spurts out. Your face will be hot and dry and have a great thirst. Fear that you are going to die.
  • Belladonna: Flushed cheeks with the neck arteries throbbing, dilated pupils, bright red blood with clots which stops and starts suddenly. You will have a bearing-down feeling and think that you insides are going to fall out. Noise and light will irritate.
  • Cinchona: Also known as China, this is a good remedy for any loss of fluid/blood and can help to sustain the body.
  • Chamomilla: Very uncivil and angry. The pain seems unbearable and you are very sensitive to pain. Cold hands and feet. The hemorrhaging will be dark.
  • Ferrum Metallicum: Red face. Can't bare the slightest noise and is worse at midnight. The blood will be dark and coagulated. Cold hands and feet.
  • Ipecacuanha: Chilly and have a pale face with cold sweat. The blood will be bright red and you will feel nauseous. The pain will be from the umbilicus to the uterus.
  • Sabina: Pains running from the back through to the front. The blood is bright red and gushing but the consistency will be thin with dark clots. Worse in the warmth.

Postpartum and Homeopathy: Asphyxia of the Newborn

This is surely a parent's worst nightmare. But as horrific as the thought might be, we are here to educate, and you might as well be fully educated - even with the ugly stuff!

The good news is, babies tend to respond quickly to homeopathic treatment.

When your baby is delivered, the lungs need to convert from inhaling fluid to air and babies that fail to breath are commonly premature, overdue (past 43 weeks) or babies whose mothers had medications during labor.

Commonly meconium or mucous can obstruct the airways. Gentle suction of the nose, mouth and throat can extract meconium or mucous.

These procedures can help along with the following remedies:

  • Antimonium Tartaricum: The first remedy to consider. The baby will have a rattling sound and be pale. The lungs are filled with thick mucus.
  • Arnica: May be used when there has been a traumatic birth resulting in any head bruising or trauma. There is a weakness in babies' reflexes.
  • Camphora: Use if Antimonium Tartaricum has failed. Use for meconium in the lungs. The baby is freezing cold, blue and limp. The pulse is small and weak.
  • Opium: Use for coma or asphyxia especially after fright. The baby is unresponsive. The mother may have been frightened.
  • Carbo Veg: Baby is limp, near death, blue and needs oxygen.
  • Lauroceraus: Baby will be cold, blue but gasping for breath with a failing pulse.

    Perineal Tears and Episiotomies

Some say that perineal massage throughout the pregnancy and kegel exercises can minimize the need for episiotomies. In the event of a tear, cloth-wrapped ice packs soaked with a solution of Calendula in the first 24 hours can prevent infection and promote healing.

Other remedies to speed healing are:

  • Arnica: You feel bruised and are worse from touch. It seems that the bed or chair is too hard. Arnica will help control bleeding, swelling and prevent infections.
  • Staphisagria: When an episiotomy has been performed. The clean, razor cut wounds suits the action of this remedy and taking it will speed healing and tissue restoration.
  • Hypericum: There a lot of pain that radiates from the tear or cut.

    Postpartum and Homeopathy: Post-natal Depression

Post-natal depression effects one in every ten women and homeopathy can help you to cope while things are settling down into a routine.

Just getting more sleep and having someone to help with your baby can help in mild post-natal depression. It is important that women who are depressed not feel isolated and are able to talk. Having a non-judgmental listener can help.

Post-natal depression may be expressed by weeping, feeling hopeless, inadequate and anxious about the new pressures of motherhood. You may not be able to sleep and you might have little interest in daily activities. It is important to match the symptoms to a remedy.

Here are a few to consider:

  • Sepia: Depression due to hormonal imbalances. May reject the baby or may not want to nurse. Exhausted. Chilly and worse in cold air. Physical exercise or dancing will help to feel better. Emotional and unable to express deep feelings. Joyless, tearful, critical and even grumpy. Wants to be alone and is worse from consolation. Craves chocolate, lemons, pickles and cold drinks.
  • Natrum Muriaticum: Emotional, introverted and solitary. Will seem remorseful rather than depressed. Weep when alone and feel worse from heat and sunlight. Has trouble communicating feelings and won't ask for help. Craves salt.
  • Pulsatilla: Weeps easily in company. Evokes sympathy and is gentle with changeable moods. Craves fresh air and doesn't like a stuffy, warm room. Thirst-less.
  • Plantina: Aloof and contemptuous. Feel alone in the world. You will have the sensation of constrictions or bandages. Better in fresh air. You want the best of everything. May have an aversion to meat.
