Parsley Health Benefits: Fun Facts About Parsley

  • Nobody is certain where parsley originated, though it is said by some to have originated in Sardinia - an island off the coasts of Italy and France.
  • Parsley is widely used as a companion plant in gardens. Like many other members of the carrot family, it attracts predatory insects, including wasps and predatory flies to gardens, which then tend to protect plants nearby. For example, they are especially useful for protecting tomato plants as the wasps that kill tomato hornworms also eat nectar from parsley.
  • According to the Oxford English Dictionary the first known use of the form parsley - as opposed to the older Petrosili form - was in William Langland's 1376 work Piers Plowman, where he refers to "persely."
  • The Ancient Romans loved parsley. In the first century AD, Pliny wrote that no salad or sauce should be served without parsley. He also wrote that all classes of people loved parsley.
  • People who looked very sick and near death were often said to be "in need of parsley."

  • Parsley Health Benefits: Other Uses for Parsley

Parsley is wonderful for many things: internally - as described above - and externally.

  • When crushed and rubbed on the skin, parsley is said to reduce itching of bites.
  • Used as a poultice parsley might: relieve breast tenderness in lactating women; soothe tired, irritated eyes, and speed the healing of bruises.

  • Some believe that when chewed, parsley can freshen bad breath - especially after eating garlic.

  • Parsley Health Benefits: Parsley Testimonials

We were only able to find 2 testimonials and they were both anonymous. If you have a story you'd like to share, you may do so here.

    Polyps and Diverticulitis:

"I had this condition for 8 years and had to go in every 6 months to remove the polyps - 38 the first time and a few less thereafter - until I was down to once a year. I was having constant diarrhea also. I began taking 1 Bowel Build, 2 Black Currant Oil, and 2 Parsley twice a day. The diarrhea stopped and I'm having two regular BMs a day. At my annual check-up there was only 1 polyp and the Dr. said keeping doing what I'm doing. I certainly will."

    Problems with Urination:

"While I was visiting my grandmother, she told me she was having problems urinating. She said it had been since the day before that she had passed urine even after drinking water. I was alarmed that she didn't say anything before to someone. She knew I was using natural remedies and asked if I knew of something she could use. I had Parsley at the house and took her some. She took it and within two hours she was able to pass the urine. She's on so much medication, it was nice to find a natural alternative.
