Natural Labor Induction Methods

Is a natural labor induction possible? Is it safe? Will it work? And is it necessary?

Yes, inducing labor naturally is possible and there are various methods to do so.

As to safety, that answer is not as clear cut. It is safer than a medical induction but any induction poses some risks. The good news about natural induction methods is that most of them will not work unless your body - and baby - are ready.

Most inductions are not necessary but rather are done for 2 main reasons:

1) To cover your doctor's rear - this is also called defensive medicine.

2) Convenience

Very rarely are inductions performed out of necessity.

As for the medical community, it generally believes that: "No do-it-yourself methods have been proven consistently to be both safe and effective."

    Natural Pregnancy Memory from Alisha

When I was pregnant with Johnathan, I went past my due date. After one week, the birth center scheduled me a "Stress Test" and informed me they would start an induction - their policy. Getting closer to an induction and a possible c-section. That was not going to happen!!!

I decided to try and induce with Castor oil the day before my test. Not only did it clean me out, but it did in fact send me into labor. Stress test cancelled...and he was born healthy and naturally.

This is one of the reasons I chose to stay home with my next baby!
