my hospital experience

by Katrina Prain
(Byron, Michigan USA)

I've had 5 healthy babies. But my story is about my 4th baby. Four of my children were born in the hospital.

I always had fast easy deliveries. No complications. My body knew what to do and just did it.

Unfortunately,
the nurse thought she knew more than me about my body when I went in to deliver my 4th child. She wanted
to hook me up to an IV. I told her it wouldn't be necessary because I always have easy deliveries. She was in
a panic. "Well, what if you need fluids? What if something goes wrong?", she says. I told her nothing will
go wrong and so then she agreed not to hook me up to an IV but told me that if I needed something in a
hurry that she'll stick a needle in my thigh. Which she then said that she liked to stick people with needles
and that she was very good at it.

Unfortunately, I found out that she was telling the truth. She WAS VERY
good at giving shots. I had my baby. No complications but because it was my 4th baby and I was in my
30's they decided to give me pitocin"just in case I might hemmorage".

They stuck the needle in my
thigh and within 5 minutes I was in the most excruciating pain I had ever experienced! I seriously wanted
to die! I've never experienced anything like that before in my life and please keep in mind that I've had

ALL my children with NO medication and all completely natural! That poor little girl I delivered that day
had a mama who didn't want to hold her, didn't want to nurse her all because she was in too much pain
to.

I breastfed all my children and I was in too much pain to breastfeed her. It was the most horrifying
experience I ever had. When I got pregnant with my 5th child I got smarter. I went to a midwife who
showed me that having a baby can be the most WONDERFUL experience in the world.

Hospitals should
try to mirror that.

Now it's been 5 years since I had my 4th baby. I have had blood clots in my lungs since I've had her.
I've just recently found out I have an enlarged heart of the right ventricle. The doctors are perplexed because
I'm only 38 and it's not ordinary. I just wonder if it's possible the pitocin could have had anything to do with it. I'm a person who doesn't drink cafffeine, smoke, or drink alcohol. I always believedeating healthy would give me a long life. I don't take medications at any time either. Not even for a headache. The pitocin was the one thing foreign that was put in my body. It just makes me wonder if it has something to do with it.
