Are homeopathy and breastfeeding compatible? Can homeopathy help with breastfeeding problems?

Yes on both counts!

Problems that can make it difficult for women to breastfeed successfully include mastitis - breast infection, painful or cracked nipples and even a slow - or low - milk supply.

Homeopaths - as well as anyone with some degree of common sense - recognize that breast milk gives babies the best start in life. If you have breastfeeding problems, please do keep in touch with your midwife, a lactation consultant, an experienced mom who has successfully breastfed, La Leche League, and/or your homeopath. If you are committed to breastfeeding your baby, know that most challenges can be overcome WITH the right support.

Useful Remedies

Cracked and Sore Nipples

  • Castor Equi: For sore and cracked nipples. It has a reputation for healing even the most advanced and "hopeless" cases.

  • Hepar Sulphuris: It is useful for sore and cracked nipples overgrown with Staph. or Strep. or other pus forming organism. Other characteristics: irritability, chilliness, sensitivity to cold winds or drafts, improvements from heat or warmth in any form.

  • Phytolacca: For sore, cracked nipples, which hurt when the baby nurses. It is also useful for breast infections - like mastitis - where there are painful lumps in the breast.

  • Silica: In the early weeks of breastfeeding if the nipples are very sore and tend to crack easily. Silica 6c may be given 4 times daily or as needed.









    • Mastitis

  • Belladonna: Leading remedy for breast infections. Especially suitable when there is a high fever.

  • Bryonia: It is a great remedy for acute mastitis. It is indicated when the symptoms develop more slowly. Other indication: thirsty and irritable.

  • Phytolacca: It is useful after Bryonia and Belladonna have worked but failed to removed all the symptoms.

  • Silica: For recurrent mastitis that has never fully resolved.

    I have only had a full fledge breast infection once and it was awful! It came on fast and before I realized what was happening I was in bed with a high fever and I felt I had been hit by a truck. At that time, I took Echinacea every two hours until my fever broke - within 24 hours.

    After that time, whenever I felt the hint of a breast infection I would take both Bryonia 12c - or 30c - and Belladonna 12c. Every time the remedies worked like a charm.
