    Homemade Herbal Remedies: Teas

Herbal teas are gentle, soothing, beneficial, and enjoyable any time of day...and night.

They are the best known and most common way we deal with herbs.

Herbal teas are easily found pre-made in most stores. However, if you choose to make your own batch, here is an easy recipe:

    Homemade Herbal Remedies

  • 1 T. of dried herbs
  • 1/2 pint water
  • Place the dried herbs into a clean non-reactive - non-aluminum - metal or enamel pot with a lid or place in a tea holder.

Bring water to a boil and pour the water over the herbs.

Cover and let steep for 5 to 10 minutes.

If you are not using a tea holder, you will need to strain the tea in a non-aluminum strainer.

    Homemade Herbal Remedies: Infusion

Infusions are stronger than teas and will extract more nutrients from the plant material.

Infusions - like teas - are intended for immediate use. However, you may store for a maximum of 24 hours in the refrigerator.

    How to make Herbal Remedies

  • 1 T. of dried herbs
  • 1 pint - 2 cups - of water
  • Bring water to a boil in a non-reactive metal pan or an enamel or glass container.

    Pour water over the herbs.

Let steep covered for 10 to 20 minutes then strain and drink.

    Homemade Herbal Remedies: Decoction

Decoctions are like teas but they are used for hard woody substances such as roots, bark, and stems.

They too - like teas and infusions - are intended for immediate use. However, you may store them for a maximum of 72 hours - 3 days - in the refrigerator.

    information on herbal remedies
  • 1 T. of dried herb or root
  • 1 pint water
  • Cut or crush the plant material and add to the water.

Simmer with the lid off until the volume of water is reduced by 1/4.

Cool, strain, and take in divided doses according to the herb's use.

    Homemade Herbal Remedies: Tincture

Tinctures extract the chemical constituents of the plants in alcohol, cider vinegar, or vegetable glycerin.

Alcohol is most effective and therefore it is the medium most commonly used.

Tinctures are invaluable because water can only retrieve some of the medicinal properties.

Tinctures are extremely powerful and they will last indefinitely if stored correctly. Please, store your tincture in a dark bottle.

    Information about herbal remedies:

  • One teaspoon of tincture will approximately equal the medicinal strength of 1 cup of infusion.
  • If you do not like the alcohol taste: You may put 1 tsp. of tincture in a glass of water and let stand for a while, the alcohol will evaporate.

  • information on herbal remedies

Place your plant material in a clear jar to about 2/3 full.

    Fill the jar with Vodka.

Place in a cool place and let macerate for about 2 weeks. Shake every once in a while.

Strain with cheesecloth and place in dark containers

Store in a dark, cool place.

    Homemade Herbal Remedies: Poultice

Poultices are an effective way of applying herbs directly to the skin.

The fresh leaves can be bruised and mashed, or you may also use powdered or dried herbs.

Poultices are used hot and they are useful for drawing inflammation to the surface. They are also good to use to draw out lung congestion.

    homemade herbal remedies

  • Use about 1/4 to 1/2 of a cup more or less - of plant material. You can use one single herb or a mix of different ones.
  • 1 pint of water
  • In a non-reactive saucepan, combine the herbs and the water and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes.

Drain the water off but keep the herbs!

Dampen a clean kitchen towel in warm water and place the herbs in the center. Fold the towel over the herbs and place the poultice in the area you want to treat. Leave until the herbs have cooled.

If used on the back, another way would be to place the dampened towel on the back and spread the herbs on top. Then cover with another towel and place warm massage rocks on top of that towel. The rocks will maintain the heat much longer.

    Homemade Herbal Remedies: Syrup

Syrups are very useful for cough.

Commercial cough syrups have proven to be quite dangerous especially for children. This is a wonderful alternative.

Caution: Do not use for children under 1 year of age.

    homemade herbal remedies

  • 1 pint of decoction from the herb or herbs of your choice
  • 1 cup honey
  • Prepare your decoction and add the honey.

Simmer on low heat for 10 minutes.

Vegetable glycerin can be added to help preserve the syrup using 4 T. of glycerin to every 8 T. of syrup.

However this is not absolutely necessary since honey acts as a natural preservative.

Homemade Herbal Remedies: Ointments and salves

Ointments and salves do not need much explanation.

They are usually very moisturizing as they are rich in oils.

    homemade herbal remedies

First you will need to infuse the herb or herbs of your choice in pure virgin olive oil.

You will fill a mason jar with your herb (3/4 full). Then you will pour the oil over the herb. Set the jar in a warm place for a couple of weeks. A window seal works well.

Second, you will strain the oil from the plant material with cheese cloth. Discard the herbs.

Third, you take use about two ounces of beeswax that you will place in a pan on top of a double boiler. Melt the wax over low heat. When the wax is melted you will start adding some of the infused oil a little at a time. Use very little oil.
Once in a while sprinkle a drop of oil-wax mixture on a plate. Once it is dry determine if you like the consistency.
If too hard add oil, if too soft add beeswax.

Fourth, you can add other ingredients to this basic recipe:

  • Shea butter
  • Essential oils
  • Etc.
