Interview with a Homebirth Dad

Interview with a homebirth dad - in this case my husband Ben - (Florence). We have been married since 1993 and our first child was born 11 months after our wedding. The birth of our first born son was nothing short of "magical" for us, it strengthened our relationship and marriage in many ways and Ben was the best doula ever...I have said many times that I could give birth without a midwife but I could never give birth without him...not because he helped me during labor - although he did - but because I needed his presence.

Interview with a homebirth dad note: Our first born child was born at a free standing birth center. He was the only one of our 9 births not at home.

When I said I wanted a natural birth with no interventions at all, what did you think?

I was fine with it and it made sense.

Had you given much thought to birth and labor before?

No.

Where you afraid?

I had some concerns but mainly because of the unknown, it was something we had never gone through before.

Did you see the birth process as unsafe?

No.

For you, how was the birth experience?

It was huge! It was powerful, electrifying, freeing...I don't know how to describe it.

How did you feel about me?

I was proud and in awe. I was grateful and ecstatic.

Grateful?

Yes, for you being to do what was best for our child and for the sacrifices you have made.

Interview with a Homebirth Dad

What made you willing to have a homebirth for our other children?

Because it was best for the health of mother and child. After our first birth, it just made sense.

In 2000, we lost a daughter who was born at home and even though her death was not related to the homebirth, many family members gave us a hard time. It was brutal emotionally. In 2003, we were pregnant again and we debated for the first time whether we should give birth at home or not mainly so that we would not have to put up with the negativity. What made you decide to stay home despite the nay sayers?

Again for your health and the baby's. There can be some risks in birth - as in anything else - I believe that the risks greatly increase in a hospital. Home is safe...

Did you find birth messy or yucky?

No.

Do you have any regrets?

No.

We chose to have twins at home, did you feel we were taking risks?

No.
