The First Year With Twins

"What is the first year with twins like?" It is a question all future moms of twins ask.

If you are a first time mom, just the thought of having one newborn can be daunting. There are so many questions:

  • How often does a baby wake up during the night?
  • What does breastfeeding feel like?
  • How are we going to co-sleep?
  • Will I be a good mom?
  • What kind of diapers will we use?
  • If you already have some children, you KNOW what you are in for!

So how bad - or good - is it?

First, let me tell you that having twins is amazing and wonderful. It truly is.

Second, having twins is rough and you WILL need help. When I had my second set I was blessed to have older kids who really helped mostly holding babies.

    The First Few Months

Here is what you will truly need:

  • Extra pairs of hands
  • Baby carrier
  • A co-sleeper or portable bed
  • Bouncy seats
  • I must explain the bouncy seat...when you are feeding one baby, there are times the other baby will not want to nurse and no one will be available to help, in those time bouncing a fussy baby will be a life saver.

The First Year With Twins: Breastfeeding

    Can you totally breastfeed twins?

    Yes, a thousand times, yes.

The key to your success is to be committed, supported and to nourish yourself well - starting before the birth of your babies.

I totally breastfeed my babies for 10 months with no supplements or bottles of any kind and then we went on to nurse for almost 3 years. The only way this can be achieved is to be fully committed to breastfeeding and attachment parenting because the first few months, breastfeeding is ALL you will do!

    Is it worth it?

Heck yes, every bit of it is!

The First Year With Twins: Bonding

I think any mom who is expecting twins wonders if she will bond with one baby more than with the other which is not all that different than second time moms wondering if they will love the new baby as much as the first.

I care for my babies the same while seeing they were two different babies with different personalities.

However, some moms have had difficulties bonding at times especially if she is separated from one of her babies for medical reasons. This can be overcome and one of the best ways is to breastfeed.
