me too
by: Michaelle K.

My first two pregnancies I delievered fast and without drugs. My third after 14 hours i asked for an epidural. Once I was released from the hospital my lower right side back pain started. This also included sciatia pain down my right leg and also muscle spasms. I was told this is a common side effect and will take awhile to subside. 5 years later, 3 times having those pains result in me throwing my back and and in so much pain I couldn't sit or walk that resulted in ER visits with steroid shots, and me being sent home with a script for muscle relaxers and several pain pills. The last time resulted in 4 months of PT and if it returns an MRI. I was told I have a bulging disks . i don't have an overly physical job and the last time I threw my back out was Christmas day plugging in the Christmas tree. Never had back pain or sciatic nerve pain until I had an epidural. No doctor will admit that this could be caused from a problem with the epidural its self. I was told it was cause I was overweight. I'm, 5'3" 157. Yes a little over my "highest" weight hardly from being overweight. My PT said they see women all the time that have had epidurals and suffer from the same side effects. Wish I would have heard this I would have turned it down.

I believe this happened to me!!!!
by: Anonymous

I believe this happened to me 17 years ago and now I have sciatic nerve damage. I had headaches after my first child and when I received the epidural with my second child, then 6 months later I started having major problems with my back. Just 4 years ago I was diagnosed with a herniated and bulging disk which I will have to suffer with the rest of my life! Only recommendation and relief I am being offered is steroid via an injection again in my spine. I recommend for all woman to get as much information on epidurals and what can happen. And if anything happens, let your doctor know right away...I didn't. I should have known the signs, especially when it took a while to find an opening in my spine for the first injection I received...that dr was very nervous. Please don't be quiet like me...hope this is a blessing for someone.

buldging discs #2
by: Anonymous

Jamie, I do not have any answers for you; only a story quite like yours. Not me, but my daughter who is now 30 years old and has had 3 pregnancies (2) successful ones.

She had an epidural with each of her 3 deliveries. In each instance, she had back pain and her pain seemed to progress with after each delivery.

She recently went to the doctor and had an MRI. The MRI showed that she had a herniated disc/buldging disc as well and she was told should would have back problems for the rest of her life.

I/we never linked this back pain to the epidurals until today actually. I heard something mentioned on the radio concerning this and now reading your email; I am certain of it.

If you have received any responses from anyone on any recommendations on this, please let us know.
