Amino Acids During Pregnancy
by: Natural Pregnancy Mentor - Florence

Hi Ruby,

This is a great question! I don't know that I have the answers. I do have some input though.

Amino acids are already part of your diet since they are the building blocks for proteins. Maybe a safe way to obtain them could be through your diet.

Yet, we all know that some deficiencies cannot be corrected by diet alone anymore.

That brings a second point, what would be the source for the amino acids you wish to take? That would be a concern of mine.

Some believe that nothing but what is given by a doctor is safe during pregnancy...including drugs like Tylenol. Yet, even though some drugs are safer than others - and Tylenol would belong to the safest category - drugs are intrinsically not safe. That is why they are called drugs.

The truth about amino acid supplementation is that little is known of their use during pregnancy.

As I mentioned previously you already consume amino acids in your diet. The problem with supplementation is that you would be taking them in much higher concentrations.

Amino acids have been used to treat depression and anxiety. Are the drugs to treat those ailments safer than the amino acids?

Maybe looking at each amino acid individually might give better results or using them all in combination. Sometimes the problem can be by taking individual supplements.

If it were me I would try to get those amino acids from my diet: this article might help.
As I said there is too little research.

Article #2

To sum up:

"Side effects of amino acid supplements.

Although most supplements of amino acids are practically harmless and offer many benefits, there are some supplements that can cause restlessness, anxiety and rapid heart beat at higher doses. For instance, Tyrosine if taken in large amounts can cause restlessness and anxiety.

Too many amino acid supplements intake increase the load on the kidneys. Unbalanced amino acid mixtures or single amino acids can be toxic. Amino acid supplements used on the basis of a high protein and low fat diet can cause abnormal heart rhythms.

It is essential to check with the doctor before consuming any kind of amino acid supplement. It is also necessary to stick to the recommended dosage to avoid possible side effects."
