Dr. John StevensonDr. John Stevenson was born October 5th, 1921 in Melbourne, Australia. After leaving school in 1938, he tried laboring work and clerical work. He was however unable to settle in either kind of employment. ![]() In 1942, at the age of 21, he heard a medical student talking about his medical studies. He decided to become a doctor and he graduated in April of 1957. He found general practice enjoyable, inspiring and fulfilling. Early in 1976, he became involved by "chance" in home births and was amazed to discover that there was a much better - safer - way to deliver babies: "with the mother in control, with her family present, with helpers of
her own choosing, and with her baby given unrestricted love and welcoming." Seven years later, Dr. John - as he likes to be called - learned that obstetricians were pestering his transfer patients for complaints. Because of his views on homebirth, he was being perceived as a threat to be removed if not destroyed. Eventually, those same doctors obtained two complaints and they proceeded to have him de-registered in February of 1984. However, Dr. John stills campaigns for gentle, natural births. We are sorry to say that Dr. John - as he was know by those of us who loved him - passed away November 26, 2010, at the age of 89.
