British Study on Midwifery

British Study on midwifery #1

In 1902, England enacted the Midwife Act. The act was to set certain standards and help promote well trained midwives. In the 8 years that followed infant mortality sharply declined...by 30%!

This improvement was attributed by the British authorities to the improved and increased practice of midwifery.

Infant Mortality Rates

106 per 1000

We find the next study even more compelling.

English study on Midwifery #2

In this British study on midwifery done by the British Department of Health the causes of maternal deaths were cataloged throughout England. The researchers studied a 3 year span - 1970-1972 - and rated all deaths as preventable or unpreventable.

Preventable Deaths

Attributed To

2%

Midwife error

8.4%

Anesthetists (drugs)

16.6%

Family practitioner

30.5%

Patient responsibility

42.1%

Hospital staff **

67% of preventable deaths were iatrogenic - doctor caused.

** Hospital staff meaning: OBGYNS, OBGYN residents or Labor and Delivery nurses under the care of an OBGYN.

Those results cannot be interpreted by saying that doctors attended more births since during that time most births were attended by midwives. Yet, despite the fact that midwives attended most births, doctors were either directly or indirectly related to 2/3 of the deaths.

Neither can the case be made that doctors attended more high risks births since the data was compiled for "preventable" deaths.

This study implies that midwife-based care is indeed safer than doctor-based care. The safety of midwifery has been established by many other studies worldwide.

Midwives have a model that is better and safer. So midwife or doctor? You be the judge.
